MEMBERS' PROFILE

M.C. Gupta, IAS (President)

A former civil servant of the 1960 batch of the civil service, Shri Gupta retired as Chief Secretary, Haryana in January 1997. He had the distinction of serving as Chief Secretary of the state three times. He held major senior positions in the state government like Excise and Taxation Commissioner; Secretary, Finance, Industry, Home, Urban Development, Aviation, Power etc.

In the Government of India, he served as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance; Joint Secretary in Ministry of Industry; Adviser, Planning Commission; Member Secretary, Tenth Finance Commission and Secretary to the Government of India in Ministry of Industries, Public Enterprise and Company Affairs. He also served as Director, Indian Institute of Public Administration for five years from 1997 to 2002.

He has authored a book on Haryana and has co-edited a number of books on different issues. Mr. Gupta is presently Adviser to UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) at their regional office in Delhi. He has also been conferred Honorary Fellowship by the Birmingham School of Public Policy.

He has also been awarded a very prestigious National Order of Merit by President of France, Jacques Chirac in 2004.

Malaya Goswami

A lecturer with Jagiroad College, Assam, teaching Education since 1983, she won the Best Actress Award in 1992 National Film Awards and since then she has delighted cinema viewers with some quality performances. She is also the founder Secretary of a socio-cultural women’s organisation - Arpita, in Jagiroad, Assam, and has been associated with several cultural organisations. Representing National Film Festival twice as a jury member, she is now an executive member of Jyoti Chitraban Film Society, Assam as well as a member of advisory committee of Drama of Shankardeva Kala Kshetra.

Ms. Goswami is also the executive member of the East Zone Cultural Centre, Kolkata, where she represents Assam.

Adil Hussain

Born in Assam. Worked as an actor from his childhood and eventually started acting professionally for stage, television, film, radio, street performance, video films...etc. since 1984. He graduated from National School of Drama, India in 1993. Received Festival of India Award through British Council to study advance-acting course in Drama Studio, London, UK.

Worked extensively on the craft of acting with Khalid Tyabji, Naseeruddin Shah, Barry John, Shaupon Boshu from 1994 to 1998. Performed and conducted workshops on acting in India, Europe and Africa. He is a visiting faculty (on the craft of acting) in National School of Drama in New Delhi, Drama School of Amsterdam, Royal Conservatory of Performing Arts, the Hague in the Netherlands.

Shivendra Kundra

Mr. Kundra is a partner in the law firm, ‘Kundra & Bansal’ (K & B), specializing in corporate laws. Before setting up ‘K & B’, he had worked for the consulting firm, Arthur Anderson as an in-house counsel for three years.

Mr. Kundra has also had a long association with the electronic media – he anchored English News on Doordarshan for over ten years. He has degrees in Economics and Laws from the University of Delhi and a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the Thompson Foundation, Wales.

B. S. Mipun

A Post Graduate in Geography from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Dr. Mipun is at present Head, Department of Geography, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

He specializes in remote sensing and regularly participates and represents the University and the region in national and international seminars and conferences.

Ulupee Kakoty

Ulupee Kakoty presently works as Coordinator, Population and Development Education, an UNFPA sponsored project. A physical anthropologist, she has been involved with education and welfare projects since 1975. She was the founder principal of a school that she established in Guwahati (Assam) for an international society. Later, she was the State Coordinator (ECE) in the World Bank supported District Primary Education Project (DPEP) in Assam.

She was also the Editor of Assamese and Bodo (language) news letters published by DPEP, Assam. She has so far produced many educational docu-feature films and audiocassettes. A regular literary contributor to various newspapers and AIR, she is also associated with Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses for their north eastern AIDS programme, and Kaziranga, a voluntary agency working for environment.


Nayanmoni Baruah

An eminent filmmaker, Mr. Baruah is a Rajat Kamal (1984 and 1987) winner in Film Festival (India). Based in Mumbai, he has already made over forty films and documentaries covering various issues.

His development films covers Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Film Division. Shri Baruah has also produced a number of programmes for Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, Assam.

Monalisa Tomar

A lecturer with Delhi Polytechnic teaching sound broadcasting, Ms. Tomar has participated in several media projects in Delhi. About two years ago she also looked after the editorial work of a diplomatic magazine namely Indo-Latin American File. A keen broadcaster, she is an avid follower of radio journalism in India.

Atul Dev Sarmah (General Secretary)

With over twenty years of experience in the field of education and media , Mr. Sarmah now coordinates development projects for Media Management Group for Literacy and Development as the CEO. During his stint as an official of the Government of India till the year 2000, Mr. Sarmah headed the print media division in the Ministry of Human Resource Development. While in the Ministry, he also performed an additional responsibility of heading the North East Cell for implementation of plans and programmes pertaining to the Departments of Education, Women and Child Development, Youth Affairs and Sports and Culture, in the region.

He was a member of the Media Task Force, Ministry of Human Resource Development and also coordinated projects with the United Nation’s agencies in India, including UNESCO and UNICEF.

He has also been nominated as Member, Fast Track Committee of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.
