WORK PROFILE

THE THEATRE INITIATIVE - Nature of work (1/3)

Performer - the one who performs.
Actor - who does an action.
Doer - who does a deed.

There is a very fine distinction between these categories. It is important to grasp the differences in order to focus this work in the field of practical research more precisely. Another way to arrive at a comfortable understanding is to find commonalities, similarities, and meeting points, using practical research methods.

Mr. Adil Hussain Program Director

The practical research is based on the actual actions in the workspace as well as those in everyday life.

Common features of an action acted by an Actor a performance performed by a Performer, and something done by a Doer, are the doorways into the very illusive fine lines, between these three modes of actions: performed, acted, and done.

As the attached resume illustrates, various teachers have influenced my training as an actor since beginning my career in 1971.  Since then, my journey through theatre, stand-up comedy, radio plays, street plays, television and video films, documentaries and training at National School of Drama New Delhi, drama school in London and my work to understand the craft of performance with my teachers such as Khalid Tyabji and Shaupon Basu,Barry John, Naseeruddin Shah, Robin Das, have led me to explore this practical work with others of like mind. I have teamed up with others who are completely dedicated to the journey into the deeper realms of experiential understanding of the craft of performance and acting.

Since January 2005, the work on the floor has started with some graduates from National School of Drama New Delhi and some singers and dancers from Europe. The work has delved into deeper grounds to seek the foundations of the craft of performance and acting, in order to explore the essence of Being in a given space while being watched, witnessed, observed or seen by the other, i.e., the audience. The tools and techniques must be graspable and workable for this group of workers who are from different parts of the world and who have different goals to arrive at as a Performer, Actor, Singer or Dance.
